Human trials show that kefir can improve some blood-sugar measures. The most consistent result is a small decrease in fasting blood glucose, and a newer meta-analysis also found better HOMA-IR. The effect is modest and does not establish kefir as a diabetes therapy or prove that it lowers HbA1c.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<h2>Why the blood-sugar marker matters<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<p>Fasting blood glucose is one measurement taken after fasting, often in the morning. It can change with sleep, stress, illness, activity, and what you ate the day before. Fasting insulin is a related hormone measurement. HOMA-IR combines fasting glucose and fasting insulin in a calculation used as an estimate of insulin resistance. It is useful for research, but it is not the same as a direct diagnosis or a home glucose reading.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>HbA1c reflects average blood glucose over roughly the previous two to three months. It answers a different question from a fasting measurement. A change in fasting glucose or HOMA-IR therefore does not prove that kefir will lower HbA1c.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<h2>What did the human research find?<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"ktw-evidence-box\"><span>2021 systematic review and meta-analysis<\/span><strong>Lower fasting glucose and insulin, but no statistically significant HbA1c effect<\/strong><p>Salari and colleagues reviewed six randomized controlled trials involving 323 people. Compared with control groups, kefir interventions reduced fasting blood glucose by an average of 10.28 mg\/dL (95% CI -16.53 to -4.02) and fasting insulin by 2.87 (95% CI -3.96 to -1.78) in the pooled analysis. HbA1c fell by 0.64 percentage points (95% CI -1.36 to 0.08), but the confidence interval crossed no difference and the result was not statistically significant. The trials differed in duration, dose, participants, and kefir preparation, so the average is not a promised result for an individual.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"ktw-evidence-box\"><span>Newer review published online in 2025<\/span><strong>Lower fasting glucose and HOMA-IR, without clear effects on weight, lipids, or inflammation<\/strong><p>Hamsho and colleagues included 24 interventional studies identified from searches up to January 2025. The pooled analysis found fasting blood glucose was 8.46 mg\/dL lower and HOMA-IR was 1.71 lower after kefir consumption. It found no significant effect on anthropometric measures such as body weight, lipid profile, or inflammatory markers. Fermentation changes the food, and the protein, fat, acidity, and meal context can all affect how a food fits into a meal. Researchers have proposed roles for fermentation products and the gut microbiome, but human studies have not identified one mechanism that explains every kefir product or every result.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<h2>Sweetened kefir can change the answer<\/h2>\n\t\t\t<p>The studies do not give a free pass to sweetened kefir drinks. Added sugar increases the carbohydrate load of the drink, and fermentation does not remove every carbohydrate. Flavoured kefir, fruit preparations, syrups, and sweet toppings can turn a reasonable food choice into a much sweeter one.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>When comparing products, look for plain or unsweetened kefir, read the nutrition label for total carbohydrate and sugars per serving, check the serving size, and include the drink in your usual meal plan. The trials used different products, amounts, and durations, so do not copy a research dose as a personal prescription. Choose a plain product, follow its label serving information, and fit it into the eating pattern recommended for you. If you are new to fermented foods, introduce it in a manageable amount and pay attention to bloating, diarrhoea, or other symptoms.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>If you use insulin or another glucose-lowering medicine, do not change, stop, or replace it with kefir. Ask your healthcare professional how to monitor your glucose when making a meaningful diet change. Milk kefir still contains dairy proteins and may contain lactose. People with weakened immunity, and anyone making kefir at home, should use pasteurized ingredients and careful food-safety practices.
